Current IRCC notice
Foreign nationals living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Uganda are temporarily not permitted to travel to Canada
We aren’t finalizing applications from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan at this time. Because of this, your processing time may be longer than the times shown below if the last country of residence on your application was one of these countries.

Permanent residence
Permanent residence processing times, if you apply today.
These figures are built differently from the ones above. IRCC counts the applications already in each inventory and estimates how long a complete application received today would take, so every stream comes with the size of its queue. IRCC refreshes them monthly, most recently on October 9, 2026. Quebec has its own figure wherever the province processes part of the file.

Sponsoring a child, by country
IRCC publishes these two figures by the country the child lives in, but only for the 9 countries below; everywhere else it has too few finalized cases to show one. Measured like the temporary residence figures, from complete applications decided in the recent past.

A lawyer’s notes
How to read these numbers without misreading them.
A look backwards, not a promise forwards
For most temporary residence streams, the figure is how long it took IRCC to finalize most complete applications it decided in the recent past. It is a description of what already happened to other people’s files. Your file joins the queue today, and the queue IRCC is working through when it reaches yours may be shorter or longer than the one those earlier files went through.
The clock starts on the day IRCC receives a complete application and stops at the decision. Anything you do before that, and anything IRCC asks you for after that, sits outside the figure: giving biometrics, the courier legs between a visa application centre and the office, a medical exam, and the time you take to answer a request for documents. If your application was incomplete, it is returned rather than refused, and the clock never started.
Why the two extension queues behave differently
Study permit extensions and work permit extensions are not measured the same way as the rest of the page. IRCC counts the applications already in that inventory and estimates how long it will take to reach a file submitted now. That is why those two tiles show how many people are waiting, and why they move with volume rather than with history. A policy change or a graduation season lands in these queues first. Today they read 6 weeks for study permit extensions and 11 weeks for work permit extensions.
If you applied to extend before your permit expired, you keep your status and your conditions while IRCC decides, which is what the regulations call maintained status. That is the practical reason the extension figure matters less than people fear and the deadline to apply matters more. How extensions work in practice is covered on our study permit and work permit pages.
Why your country changes the number
Applications from outside Canada are processed across a network of offices, each with its own inventory and its own mix of files. Verifying employment letters, bank records and civil documents takes a different amount of effort in different places, and the proportion of files that need a second look varies too. The table above makes that spread visible in a way the IRCC page, one country at a time, never does.
“No processing time available” and “Not enough data” are not warnings. They mean IRCC finalized too few applications of that type from that country to publish a figure it trusts. Apply as you normally would.
Inside Canada is a different queue, not a shortcut
The same product can carry very different figures depending on where you apply from. A visitor visa applied for from inside Canada currently lists at 12 days, while a visitor record, which is the extension of visitor status, lists at 321 days. A new work permit from inside Canada sits at 16 weeks and a new study permit at 6 weeks. These are separate inventories with separate priorities, and the right one for you depends on your status today, not on which number looks better. For parents and grandparents, the super visa is usually the better fit than a visitor visa, whatever the two figures say this week.
Permanent residence figures look forward, and they count more
The permanent residence estimates are built the other way around. IRCC counts the applications already in each inventory, the people it has processing them and the applications it expects, and estimates how long a complete application received today would take. That is why each figure comes with a queue size and moves monthly rather than weekly. Today it reads about 6 months for the Canadian Experience Class, about 7 months for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and about 7 months for a provincial nomination through Express Entry, against about 13 months for a nomination outside it.
Two things sit inside these figures that sit outside the temporary residence ones: the time to give biometrics, and for sponsorships, the assessment of the sponsor. One thing sits outside: for Express Entry the clock starts when IRCC receives the application after an invitation to apply, so months spent in the pool waiting for a draw are not counted. IRCC attaches its own caveat to every one of these estimates: the Immigration Levels Plan caps admissions each year, and when more people apply than there are spaces, the figure goes up. Which permanent residence route fits you is a different question from which queue is shortest this month.
Why Quebec has its own number
Under the Canada–Quebec Accord, Quebec selects its own economic immigrants and consents to its own family sponsorships, so a file destined for Quebec is processed twice: once by the province, once by IRCC. For sponsorships, IRCC’s Quebec figure includes the provincial step, and Quebec’s yearly admission spaces cap how many files are finalized. That is why a spouse living in Canada lists at about 32 months in Quebec against about 26 months elsewhere, and parents and grandparents at about 63 months against about 28 months. For Quebec’s economic programs it is the reverse: the figure starts only once you hold a Quebec Selection Certificate, so the CSQ wait comes first and is not shown here.
What to do when you are past the posted time
First, check that the posted time has actually passed for a completeapplication submitted on your date, and read your account for any request you may have missed. Then use the IRCC web form to ask about the file. If you still hear nothing, your Member of Parliament’s office can make an inquiry, and ordering your file notes under access-to-information shows which step the file is stuck on, which is usually more useful than any status page.
When a delay has gone well beyond the norm for no reason the file explains, the Federal Court can order IRCC to make a decision through an application for mandamus. It is a last resort, and whether a delay qualifies is a judgment call about your specific file. That is the kind of question to bring to a lawyer.
What actually slows a file down
In our experience the delays people can control come from the same handful of causes: a form that contradicts a document, a travel history with gaps, a job letter that does not say what the application says, biometrics never given, and requests for documents that went to a spam folder. The delays people cannot control are security and background screening, medical follow-ups, and measures like the one IRCC currently posts above the form (foreign nationals living in the democratic republic of the congo, south sudan and uganda are temporarily not permitted to travel to canada). A file that is complete and internally consistent on the day it is submitted avoids the first group entirely.
FAQ
Questions about IRCC processing times.
How often does IRCC update its processing times?
Most temporary residence figures are refreshed weekly, and the two extension queues on a similar cadence. The permanent residence estimates are refreshed monthly. We re-read IRCC's published data every day, so a change shows here the day it appears, and each figure carries IRCC's own last-updated date. IRCC's temporary residence figures on this page are dated October 29, 2026 and its permanent residence estimates October 9, 2026.
How long does Express Entry take right now?
IRCC's estimate for a complete application received today is about 6 months for the Canadian Experience Class, about 7 months for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and about 7 months for a provincial nomination through Express Entry. These figures include the time to give biometrics but not the time in the pool before an invitation to apply, and IRCC refreshes them monthly.
How long does spousal sponsorship take?
For a spouse or common-law partner living in Canada, outside Quebec, IRCC's current estimate is about 26 months; for a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner living outside Canada it is about 18 months. In Quebec the figures are about 32 months and about 33 months, because the province processes its part of the file and caps admissions each year. The estimates include biometrics, the sponsor's assessment and the eligibility check.
Why are the permanent residence times estimates rather than history?
For most temporary residence streams IRCC reports how long recent complete applications actually took. For permanent residence it looks forward instead: it counts the applications already in the inventory, the people assigned to process them and the applications it expects, and estimates how long a complete application received today would take. That is why each permanent residence figure comes with a queue size, and why IRCC warns that the figure rises when more people apply than the Immigration Levels Plan allows in.
Is the processing time a deadline IRCC has to meet?
No. In IRCC's own words, the times are not a maximum or a guarantee. For most streams the figure describes how long most complete applications took in the recent past; for extensions it is an estimate based on the current inventory. A file that needs a second look can take considerably longer.
Does the processing time include biometrics?
For nearly every temporary residence stream, no. The clock starts when IRCC receives a complete application and stops at the decision. Giving biometrics, transit between a visa application centre and IRCC, a medical exam, and the time you take to respond to a request all sit outside the figure.
Why does my country show no processing time?
IRCC only publishes a figure once it has finalized enough applications of that type from that country to make the number meaningful. 'No processing time available' and 'Not enough data' reflect low volume in that stream, not a problem with applications from your country. Apply as you normally would.
What is the difference between a study permit in Canada and a study permit extension?
A study permit applied for from inside Canada is a new permit, for example after a change of status, and is measured like the other historical figures (currently 6 weeks). A study permit extension continues an existing permit and is estimated from the extension inventory (currently 6 weeks). The same split applies to work permits: a new permit from inside Canada is at 16 weeks and an extension at 11 weeks.
Can a lawyer make IRCC process my application faster?
Nobody can move a file up the queue. What a lawyer can do is keep it out of the slow lane: a complete, internally consistent application avoids the requests for more documents that add weeks, and if a file has been sitting far beyond the posted time with no explanation, there are formal steps, up to an application for mandamus in the Federal Court, that a lawyer can assess for you.
Where does the data on this page come from?
From the same published files that drive IRCC's own 'Check processing times' page on canada.ca. We fetch them daily, store a dated copy, and display the figures verbatim. Nothing is estimated or adjusted by us.
Where this data comes from
Every figure on this page is read from the same published files that power IRCC’s own Check processing times page, and shown exactly as IRCC publishes it. IRCC updates most temporary residence figures weekly and the permanent residence estimates monthly. We fetch the files every day, keep a dated copy, and mark any figure that moved since IRCC’s previous update. The date on each figure is IRCC’s own, not ours. Last checked November 3, 2026.
In IRCC’s words: your application may take longer than the times shown here. They’re not a maximum or a guarantee. This page is general information, not legal advice about your file.
